Carol Streator, Director Blessings in a Backpack – A Clarification There has been some confusion about how to make donations to this program; the following information may help. You may make a one-time donation by placing a check—designated for “Blessings in a Backpack”—in the offering plate or send it to the church office. If you prefer to make a pledge to be paid later, you may place that pledge in the offering plate or get it to the church office, and then make payments as you are ready. This program will begin on September 10 and continue for the school year. Volunteers are needed to fill the backpacks; if you can help, contact Denny Unger (982-6928) or Joan Fahs (982-8680), members of the steering com-mittee. In order to protect the privacy of the children who receive this service free, the backpack program is being offered to all children in grades K-4. Those who are not eligible to receive it free will pay a fee based on the shelf price of the food provided. CONNECTIONS with our Community Fellowship of Churches Report This has been a busy summer for REACH, who assisted over thirty people with rent and utilities. The Thrift Shop clocked 910 volunteer hours this summer and improved their facility. Thursday’s Child is officially housed in the REACH building as well. They serve qualifying clients who are preschoolers and can bring a parent or guardian to the shop. The Food Pantry served 1,447 individuals (448 families) with food and sundries. Oaklawn Offers Support to Caregivers The NAMI Family to Family Education Program is a series of 11 weekly classes structured to help caregivers understand and support individuals with a serious mental illness while maintaining their own well-being. CONNECTIONS with our District and our Denomination Prayer Calendar Week of Sept. 5: Pray for all those who write, edit, create, and prepare curriculum for use in the Christian education programs of the church. Pray that those who use it may find new insights and ideas and a path to deeper and richer faith. Week of Sept. 12: Praise God for grandparents and all the older adults in our midst. Say a word of thanks for the wisdom, mentoring, and care they provide. Take time to sit down and talk with one or more of them personally. Week of Sept. 19: As people around the world observe the International Day of Prayer for Peace, say your own prayer for peace in your community, your nation, and your world, and listen with openness for what part you might play in that process. Week of Sept. 26: Pray for deacons and the many ministries of caring and caregiving that they provide. Take a moment to find a deacon in your congregation and say thank you for their service in God’s name. |
