Joys and Concerns
Please keep these concerns in your minds and hearts in the coming days:
Within our church family:
• We hold these Deacons in prayer this week: Susie Klingler, Bea Knarr, David Kreps, Richard Livingston, Mary Lutz, and Virginia Manges.
• We pray for those who were unable to worship with us last Sunday due to their current health limitations, including: Jane Cassell, Barbara Smith, Beth Stone, and Eunice Brightbill.
• Howard Uhrig hospitalized at Lutheran.
• Russ Hoover hospitalized at Parkview following surgery to replace a heart valve.
• Lana Groombridge hospitalized at Parkview following surgery.
• Anne Myers recovering from surgery on Tuesday, July 12.
Within the wider community:
• Our sister church in El Salvador, Emanuel Baptist. We pray for the newest members of Emmanuel as they are trained to provide leadership in the local community.
• Terri Penrod and Sue Raber, employed by our local school system, seriously injured this past week in a motorcycle accident.
• We for peace.
Bowman Gratitude
Dear Church Family,
Mere words are inadequate to express our deep feelings of gratitude for your love and caring expressed in so many different ways during Ray’s final illness. Both Ray’s family and mine were blessed in our time of sorrow as many of you gathered with us to share in Ray’s Memorial Service, led so fittingly by Pastor Karen. We thank you also for graciously serving a bountiful and delicious meal following the service. Your continuing expressions of love and concern confirm just what a wonderful church family you are.
Loving gratitude from Ray’s family and mine.
Ruth Bowman

Join the Fun Fest Hymn Sing
The Fellowship of Churches moved the annual Fun Fest Hymn Sing to the Firehouse last year in order to revive the tradition. I believe it was a success as it had a livelier atmosphere, and it attracted people from the street as desired. We will again host this event to kick off the Fun Fest on Thursday evening, August 11, at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse. We are looking for volunteers to serve as guest song leaders. On another note, we could also use performers between hymns if someone would rather participate by sharing music instead of leading group songs.
Thanks, Teri Workman, phone 839-9114

Circles of Trust Groups
This fall will mark the fourth year that groups will gather for a time of personal discernment and spiritual formation through a process known as “Circles of Trust.” Developed by Parker Palmer, these groups seek to assist persons in their spiritual journey through the use of silence, readings, scripture, individual and small-group reflection.
If you wish to be involved in a circle this fall, contact Steve Cripe, Helen Beery or Jim Chinworth.
Annual Conference attendee receives death threat
A credible death threat was received by an attendee of the 2011 Annual Conference, during the event held in Grand Rapids. The recipient of the threat is a gay person, and the threat made reference to the person’s sexuality.
The person had been receiving harassing e-mail communications for about a year in advance of Conference. Onsite in Grand Rapids the victim received threatening notes slipped under the hotel room door. The nature of the threats escalated onsite. Police have been investigating both the e-mails and the threatening notes. To our knowledge, no identification has been made of the perpetrator.

How to Share the Salvadoran Way
I have learned so much in my time with BVS. When I arrived in San Salvador and began my work in Cal Pipil (Emmanuel Baptist Church’s youth center) I was glued to my computer as I thought any good “productive” citizen would be. I had lists, tasks, and goals to meet each day. I have since thrown a lot of that out the window.
My lists these days consist of goals, but if one isn’t met, it’s moved to the next day; no big deal. I make lists to make sure I don’t forget something, but the determination of crossing things off has left. There are more important things going on that bring me greater joy than “being productive.”
I also now have a whole new perspective on what it means to “share.” Friendships are built on sharing. Community is built in the act of sharing. I’m still learning. Every day there’s a new lesson, or a necessary repeat or amendment to a previous lesson. I’m sure I’ll continue to learn the nuances of community and sharing along the way. I hope you’ll walk with me. – Sarah Hall, Unit #291
