Joys and Concerns
There are many ways in which our lives intersect with one another. Please keep these concerns in your minds and hearts in the coming days.
Within our church family:
• We celebrate with Dick & Mary Miller on the birth of their great-grand-daughter, Adylyn Esther Stitchter, born on December 25. Adylyn’s parent’s are Daniel & Emily Stitchter and her grandparents are Cindy & Steve Stitchter.
• We pray for those who were unable to worship with us due to their current health limitations, including: Beth Stone, Erma Petry, Fred & Lois Roop, Raymon Eller and Marg Dilling.
• Ella Mae Weaver on the death of her sister, Mary Van Dusen, at Greencroft Retirement Community in Bremen. Her Memorial Service will be on Saturday, February 5.
• Don Gable continuing his recovery in Timbercrest Healthcare.
• Louise Shively Daggett who moved back to her room in the Manor from Healthcare.
• Those who wish to keep their concerns unspoken.
Within the wider community:
• Our sister church in El Salvador, Emanuel Baptist. We pray for the Deacon Board as they evaluate 2010 and plan ministries for 2011.
• For all those people who are immediately affected by the shooting in Arizona and for our country.
• We continue our prayer for peace.

Currently we have seven attending through our congregation. The event is held in New York City and Washington DC, March 26-31. The first 100 youth and advisors to register can attend.
Conversations on Baptism, Identity and Faith continue this Sunday morning, January 16. A service in the spirit of Taize
You are invited to attend this worship service at Petersime Chapel Sunday, January 23, 7pm. The service is in the spirit of Taize, a community started during WW II to encourage the spiritual formation of young adults. Each year, particularly in the summer, up to 7,000 persons/week live in the tiny community, working together and worshiping 3 times a day. The service includes short reflective songs, prayers, silence, and scripture readings in various languages. An ensemble, including violin, piano, cello, oboe and guitar, accompanies the singing. The service will last about an hour. Join Manchester College students and staff for an evening of singing and reflection.
Souper Bowl of Caring
Each year our Middle School youth collect funds following worship on Super Bowl Sunday. This national emphasis helps raise over $11 million for local food banks. 100% of the funds collected following worship on February 6 will be donated to our local Food Pantry. Look for the middle school youth at each door after worship and donate what you are able to our local Food Pantry.
January Exercise Schedule
Both Yoga and Zumba-Gold schedules are flexible, depending on the weather. Please call the instructors for information:
Yoga: Adria Pickett, 1-260-774-9336
Zumba-Gold: Mandy Shull, 1-317-431-5744
Chili “Cook-Off” Contest!
In the past, the Fellowship Commission has sponsored a Chili Supper in January. This year we’re planning a “Chili Cook-Off Contest” on Wednesday, January 19, at 6 pm. Families or individuals are asked to prepare a 4-5 quart crock-pot of their favorite chili recipe. Desserts and salads are also requested to compliment the meal. A prize will be given to the winning chili entry, chosen by those attending. Sign up in the Narthex during December.
Keep the Phones and Cartridges coming!
If you received a new phone for Christmas and your not sure what to do with the old one, consider donating it to the senior high youth who are collecting phones and inkjet cartridges. A basket near the Food Pantry Pie Safe is a convenient place to drop off your spent cartridges and old phones. The youth will box them up, Fed-Ex them (free of charge to us) to PhoneRaiser, who will assess their condition and then send the group a check. The group has raised over $500 thus far. Thanks for your support.
Stephen Ministry
“As the days are getting longer, the cold is getting stronger” and you may find yourself feeling the effects of “cabin fever.” Our pastoral staff are all good listeners. However, you may need a regular partner on your journey for awhile, due to any number of reasons, so ask the pastor about our Stephen Ministry program. A Stephen Partner can walk with you through the winter storms.
Finding Our Way through Life Transitions
“Mindfulness in Everyday Life”
Life changes bring with them new challenges and opportunities. Understanding the predictable stages and unique characteristics of life transitions can help you find the opportunities for change and growth.
This 6-week class is for anyone anticipating or experiencing a life transition: empty nest, job loss or change, relationship changes, retirement, major move, etc. In this class you will learn more about life transitions, gain new tools, and explore the particulars of your transition in a safe, supportive environment.
Wednesdays, January 19, 26, February 2, 9, 23 and March 2: 1-2:30 p.m. Room 213
$30 for the 6 weeks
For more information or to register by January 14, contact: Nancy Olson, MA, PCC

Suggestion From Alan Kieffaber
The large, old picture on the bookshelf in the library showing several hundred people, dated 1921, should contain a number of folks known to some of us whose identity and historic value will be lost to us as time passes. To his surprise, Alan Kieffaber found several members of his family! Can you find your relatives or other prominent forebears (L.W. Shultz for one)? With our strong Brethren roots and interest in history and genealogy, we should grab this opportunity and add some notes to the above.
Garber-Simmons Senior Center
Beef & Noodle Fund Raiser
Sunday, January 16 from 11 am – 1:30 pm
At the Main View Inn, $7 per person
(dessert is available for an additional charge)
A Community Gathering!
On Wednesday evening the community is invited to gather to create a list of 1,000 "givens" (resources/assets/treasures) that make our community rich with possibilities. Are you curious about what is on the list? Please join us! The time: Wednesday, January 12, 6:30pm-8:30 pm. The place: Manchester Junior High School. Sponsored by the Town Forum and facilitated by Jeff Hawkins. Town Forum members include Debbie Chinworth, Chris Garber, Jeff Hawkins, Dave Hippensteel, Shelly Leifer, Todd Lybarger, Tony Miller, Ralph Naragon and Steve Shumaker
Martin Luther King Events
A ground-breaking Church of the Brethren pastor from Pennsylvania and stories of students and faculty who also have breached barriers highlight 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. observances Friday, Jan. 14, and Monday, Jan. 17 at Manchester College. The public is welcome at both free events. Rev. Belita Mitchell from Pennsylvania and stories of students and faculty who also have breached barriers highlight 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. observances. The first black woman ordained in the Church of the Brethren – the Rev. Belita Mitchell, pastor of Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren in Pennsylvania – will bring the keynote address for the MLK Service of Celebration and Rededication. Her speech, “Navigating the storms of life ... excess baggage not allowed”, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 in the College Union. The evening includes a student choir, readings and reflections on King’s legacy. At 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 in Petersime Chapel, readers will share student and faculty stories about challenging the status quo, as well as poetry and images. Refreshments will follow. MLK weekend is sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
The Messenger Bible Study Group will meet Monday night, January 24 at 7 p.m. in the Education Room at the foot of the elevator in the Timbercrest Manor. We will discuss the article by Bob Neff in the December Messenger, “God’s Wisdom: The Pathway of Love.” Bring your article, questions, and ideas and join us.
