CONNECTIONS with the Manchester Church Of the Brethren
FEBRUARY 2011
Joys and Concerns
There are many ways in which our lives intersect with one another. Please keep these concerns in your minds and hearts in the coming days.
Within our church family:
· The family of Howard Domer. Howard died Tuesday afternoon, January 25. The memorial service was Saturday.
· The family of Dorothy Gable. Dorothy died Wednesday morning, January 26. Arrangements are pending.
· Louise Shively Daggett hospitalized at Lutheran following a stroke.
· Ernie Barr hospitalized at Parkview. Ernie was moved from Intensive Care to a regular room this week.
· Jean Stone recovering from a recent hospitalization in Timbercrest Healthcare.
· Eunice Brightbill recovering from a recent hospitalization in Timbercrest Healthcare.
· Esther Rupel recovering at home from a recent hospitalization.
· And we pray for those who are not able to join us for worship due to their current health limitations, including: Jane Cassell, Barbara Smith, and Marg Dilling.
Within the wider community:
· Our sister church in El Salvador, Emmanuel Baptist. We pray for the hundreds of families in San Raphael as they learn improved health practices for daily living.
· Our new District Executive, Beth Sollenberger. Beth will begin her work in the District on Monday, February 21. We also pray a prayer of gratitude for the ministry of Carol Speicher Waggy, Interim District Executive.
· And in the midst of protests in Egypt, violence in Iraq and Pakistan, we continue our prayer for peace.
The family of Dorothy Gable is gathering memories of Dorothy. If you have a remembrance, please share it with the family by Thursday, Feb. 10th, by either calling (982-2864) or emailing at nbgable@gmail.com.

Tackle Hunger: join the Souper Bowl of Caring
More than 20 years ago, Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” Since that day, more than $71 million has been raised for local charities across the country through the Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into a celebration of giving and serving. Be a part of sharing God’s love with those in need. Our Middle School Youth will be collecting money on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6. Every dollar donated goes to the North Manchester Food Pantry.

Entering Lent: Turning Toward the Sacred - March 12
Join us for a day-long Lenten retreat as we prepare for the season by addressing our questions of faith. Through readings, poems, scripture, journaling and group reflection we will explore spiritual growth, discipleship and identity within the context of wholeness. The format of the day is modeled after Circles of Trust work by speaker/writer Parker Palmer. Cost for the day is $25 and includes lunch. The event will be held at Victory Noll in Huntington from 9am-4pm. Lunch is included. Makes checks payable to Manchester CoB and put entering Lent in the MEMO line. The retreat is open to the first 20 registrants. Facilitators are Jim Chinworth, Nancy Olson and Martha Waas.
CONNECTIONS with our Community:
Fellowship of Churches
Annual Reports were presented at the January meeting of the Fellowship Of Churches
Thursday’s Child has been in operation since the end of June and has served 159 children. While some of those were repeats, it is gratifying to know that another community need is being met. Contributions of baby clothes and consumables are always welcome.
The Thrift Shop logged 388 volunteer hours last month and continues to do maintenance work on their building. The volunteer appreciation event at the December FOC meeting was well attended. They are grateful for contributions of winter clothing, as well as the Christmas Cookies for their clients.
REACH served 19 clients last month, ten with housing needs and nine with utilities. Reach is especially grateful for the year-end contributions that helped so many.
The Food Pantry served 675 individuals and 19 new clients last month. There is a need for someone to make the daily bread-run and pick up items donated by the New Market. People are needed to help move inventory on March 1 to the adjoining building. A walk-in freezer will fit in that space and a search is underway. Contact Rowena Greer (982-2325)
The Fellowship of Churches Food Pantry has been managed faithfully by Rowena Greer for years. She now realizes the time has come to find someone else to take over. Based on the number of individuals helped weekly that fall within the income guidelines, it is obvious the pantry is much needed in the community and should continue.
School Kits for Church Women United
Church Women United continue to be part of Church World Service Indiana Kentucky Kit Project. Our North Manchester goal this year is 200 blunt scissors and 200 of the 70-count spiral (or tape) bound pad or 8” x 10 !/2” ruled paper. These items can be brought to the church, World Day of Prayer, March 4, or May Friendship Day, May 6 (places to be announced). Let us help make a world of difference in the lives of refugees, dislocated people and victims of natural disasters. Dorothy Weldy, Church Women United
