Next week we will produce the CONNECTIONS for January 2011.
Please submit your articles and information by Thursday, December 30, 2010.
Thank you!
Joys and Concerns
There are many ways in which our lives intersect with one another. Honoring those connections is one of the ways we continue to form the bonds of community. Please keep these concerns in your minds and hearts in the coming days.
Within our church family:
• Those who were unable to worship with us due to their current health limitations, including: Helen Evans, Margie Petry, Gene Snyder and Louise Miller.
• Louise Shively Daggett recovering at Timbercrest Healthcare following a hospitalization in Wabash.
• Ella Mae Weaver in Timbercrest Healthcare following a recent hospitalization.
• Mike Brown recovering at home following a recent hospitalization for pneumonia.
• Lucile Kinsley in Timbercrest Healthcare.
• Those among us who wish to keep their concerns close to their hearts.
Within the wider community:
• Our sister church in El Salvador, Emanuel Baptist. We pray for the wonderful school children who created Christmas Cards and wrote letters to the children of our congregation sending Christmas Blessings.
• We pray for peace.

New Books for the Library
Many thanks to Joanna Strode for sending two books by Harold Ivan Smith to the church library: On grieving the death of a father, and Grieving the death of a mother.
In Gratitude
Dear Friends,
Thanks to everyone who helped with and participated in the Fellowship of Churches annual Thanksgiving Service. Everything went so smoothly due to those who graciously pitched in. Each time we begin planning a service, I fret about the details, but God always provides. This time God provided a host of wonderful talent and the result was a worthwhile gathering full of inspiration.
Thanks again,
Teri Workman, FOC Board Chair

Christmas Eve Perfume Fund
The Perfume Fund originated with a sermon on Mark 14:3-9 titled “Foolish Generosity” (November 23, 2008). Here’s a piece of that sermon:
So we’ve got this foolish woman who breaks the jar of perfume, and pours $25,000 worth of the stuff over Jesus’ head who is in the right, and the pragmatic disciple who sets out to put an end to all this foolishness who is in the wrong. Foolishness is good and pragmatism is bad?
Well, if we read the scriptures as morality tale, maybe that is the upside down message. But I think it’s a bit more tricky than that. I think stories like these are not just about the money. They are about our hearts and our hope. Because when you come right down to it, all generosity is foolish; all “giving” (as opposed to purchasing, for example) is foolish. You give and what do you have to show for it? It’s all foolish, but…sometimes it’s fun.
I think that’s what Jesus saw in the woman who poured the perfume. Maybe he knew that the all too serious Judas was on his way to the authorities to stop this silliness. Or maybe he just knew that it’s all too rare and quite delightful to see someone give it her all. Not measuring, not calculating, not holding back; just giving it all because her heart is bursting with passion, with joy, with generosity.
The sermon also suggested that we could practice that kind of giving – with joy, generosity – and so we started the fund with an offering on Christmas Eve of 2008 and collected money throughout the next year. On Christmas Eve of 2009, we chose our first recipient from among nominations offered by our children and youth. You may remember that the recipient was the Food Pantry. Over $15,000 was donated to help those in need of food assistance in our community.
Last Friday night, following the Christmas Eve worship service, we selected a recipient for this year’s Perfume Fund. Nominations were received from children, youth, and adults 90 and over. A total of 14 nominations were submitted and Chloe Leckrone’s nomination, The Scout Fuller Fund, was chosen to receive the $5221.16 collected this year.
Scout Fuller, who died on July 7, 2007 at the age of 8, is remembered fondly by many in our congregation. The Scout Fuller Fund for Social Justice was established in her memory by her parents, Abby Fuller and Neil Wollman, and her family, to “support individuals and organizations who, in the spirit of Scout Fuller's concern for others and sense of justice, are working to improve the lives of others.” Currently the fund supports a Manchester College student, who would be otherwise unable to afford doing so, to work as a summer intern or volunteer with a not-for-profit organization that works to improve the lives of others. The fund has made awards the last three years. Information about recent recipients can be found at www.scoutfullerfund.org

Chili “Cook-Off” Contest!
In the past, the Fellowship Commission has sponsored a Chili Supper in January. This year we’re planning a “Chili Cook-Off Contest” on Wednesday, January 19, at 6 pm. Families or individuals are asked to prepare a 4-5 quart crock-pot of their favorite chili recipe. Desserts and salads are also requested to compliment the meal. A prize will be given to the winning chili entry, chosen by those attending. Sign up in the Narthex during December.
Keep the phones and cartridges coming! The senior high youth continue to collect spent ink cartridges and old cell phones to send in for recycling. Should Christmas bring a new phone into your life, we'll be glad to welcome the old. A basket is on the floor in the Vestibule for collecting cartridges and phones. Remember - only ink jet cartridges canbe returned, and they must be smaller than your fist. There is also a receptacle in the Hub at Timbercrest.
Service of Taize Worship
A Taizé-style worship service will be held Sunday, January 23 in Petersime Chapel, Manchester College, at 7 pm. The service will include singing, prayers, scripture readings, silence and candle lighting. An ensemble of instrumentalists will accompany the singing.

Many, many dishes, silverware, plates and cups have been left in the kitchen. You will find them on the bottom shelf of the large stainless steel cart by the stove. There are three trays of silverware that don’t match the church set.
