CONNECTIONS with the Manchester Church of the Brethren for September 2011

Joys and Concerns
There are many ways in which our lives are woven together. Honoring those connections is one of the ways we continue to form deeper relationships within community.

Within our church family:
·       We celebrate with Evan Kinsely on his 99th birthday which was on Saturday, August 27.
·       Those deacons we lift in prayer this week include: Susie Klingler, Bea Knarr, David Kreps, Richard Livingston, Mary Lutz and Virginia Manges.
·       Prayers for those who are not able to join us for worship due to their current health limitations, including: Kathryn Becker, Betty Campbell and Helen Hollenberg.
·       Milly Gilbert recovering in Timbercrest healthcare following a recent hospitalization.
·       Ruth Tully hospitalized at KCH.
·       The family of Bob Frantz and the family of Beth Stone. Bob’s memorial service was last Sunday afternoon. Beth’s memorial service is Saturday, September 17 at 10:30 in the Timbercrest Chapel. We also continue to keep the families of all those who are grieving the death of a loved one in our prayers.

Within the wider community:
·       Our sister church in El Salvador, Emmanuel Baptist. We pray for the mid-week Bible Study groups that seek to apply Biblical principals to daily living.
·       All those on the East Coast of the United States who are currently being affected by Hurricane Irene.
·       We pray for peace.

In Gratitude
Our sincere thanks to the Manchester Church family for the love and support you have given to the family of Wm R. Eberly during the days following his tragic death. The gifts of food, cards, phone calls, memorials, and flowers have been appreciated by all of us. This church is a caring and loving community of people. May God continue to bless us as we minister to one another.             Eloise Eberly & family

Years of Service Appreciation
Phyllis Hunn has retired from accompanying the Ecclesia Choir this year after many years of dedicated service. If you would like to join the rest of us in thanking Phyllis for sharing her talents with us for all of those years, please respond by sending her a card or letter of thanks.    Steve Cripe, President, Ecclesia Choir

CONNECTIONS with our Community:

Fellowship of Churches:
REACH assisted 24 clients this summer, with housing as the major need, followed closely by help with electricity.
The Thrift Shop is very busy processing items donated from seasonal garage sales. 788 volunteer hours have gone into the operation of the Thrift Shop this summer. They are very grateful for all the contributions from local churches as well as individuals.
The Food Pantry served 423 families this summer. They have not had the fresh produce to share, probably because of the dry weather earlier in the season. 630 volunteer hours have gone into the operation of the Food Pantry.
Thursday’s Child served 47 children this summer; many of those simply came in for baby food. If you would like to contribute to this project, contact Susan Brumley or RuthAnn Schlitt.

Fellowship of Churches appreciated the community support of their annual FunFest Hymn Sing. The next project is the Community Thanksgiving Service.

Bethany Prayer Calendar
Please join us in prayer this year for the mission and ministry of Bethany. For the month of September, please pray for both new and returning students, as well as support staff, program staff and administrative staff as we begin our 107th academic year.

NOAC Theme: Passion, Purpose, Change
In just a little over a week, nearly 900 older adults will gather for the 11th National Older Adult Conference (NOAC), held at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, September 5-9. It is not too late to register for this Church of the Brethren sponsored conference for adults age 50 and older. You may register online with a credit card at www.brethren.org/NOAC or call Kim Ebersole, NOAC coordinator, at (800) 323-8039 to have a registration brochure sent to you.

Prayers for the month of September:
September 4- This week our seasoned members will gather at Lake Junaluska for our National Older Adult Conference.  Offer a prayer of thanks for the years of ministry and mission these sisters and brothers have offered in the Church of the Brethren. May their time together be a celebration of community, friendship, and continued leadership.
September 11- It is clear that September 11, 2001 was a pivotal day in the life of many and in the ways of the world. Now ten years later, the world remains at war on several fronts. Take time this week to sit in silence simply praying the words of Psalm 46:10- “Be still and know that I am God.”
September 18- Bethany Sunday- As we celebrate and prayerfully support Bethany Theological Seminary, take time out this week to think of the ministers that have taken part in your life of faith. Give thanks to their witness to the life of the mind, the pastoral care they provided, and the vocation of ministry they shared. Ask for the whispers of the Holy Spirit to direct new ministers among us, that they may claim their own call to ministry.
September 25- The Psalms have a lot of imagery about lifting -- looking up to the hills (Psalm 121:1), lifting the soul to God (Psalm 25:1), raising hands in the sanctuary (Psalm 63:4; 134:2). In your times of prayer this week look up rather than down, raise up your hands rather than closing them in your lap. What do you notice in this new posture? What does it say about your relationship to God? Pray a word of thanks for the grace to open up to God both emotionally and physically.

September 21
On Earth Peace continues to invite congregations and community groups to recognize International Day of Prayer for Peace in their community by holding a public prayer event on or around September 21, focusing on community or global violence. A prayer service doesn't heal everything that's broken - but it is a great place to start reaching out, building relationship, and catalyzing your community. As of August 22, 81 congregations and community groups have registered with the campaign. This includes groups from 8 countries and 19 states. On Earth Peace organizers continue to seek a total of 200 groups to participate in this event. Registration is free and online at www.onearthpeace.org/idpp. Resources to assist with planning your event, as well as contact information for further On Earth Peace support, can also be found at this website.
