Spring 2012
A note from your Parish Nurse Ministry….

Sitting is the new smoking!

Prolonged sitting is hazardous to your health

Studies show we now sit more than we sleep…spending an average of 10 hours a day in a car, at work and in front of a television/computer.  Mounting evidence suggests that sitting for long periods increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer and early death, even for people who exercise daily.

Think of ways to add physical activity to your workday and leisure time.

Reduce TV viewing. Stand up when fast-forwarding or changing channels.

Put your computer on a plastic milk crate on the desk and work standing up.

Deliver messages to colleagues in person instead of texting or emailing.

Set your computer to remind you to stand up and stretch every 30 minutes.

Stand up when the phone rings.

Use a bathroom that is a longer distance from your desk/couch.

Take the stairs when possible….take the longer route to the mailbox.

Hide the TV remote!

Take a 20 minute walk over your lunch hour.

Look at minor chores as an opportunity to prevent disease.
