A Note from your Lafiya Parish Nurse...

10 ways to improve your day in just 5 minutes

1.  Make your bed.  It's a small ritual that can create a calm envirnment for you in your bedroom - a contributor to good "sleep hygien" ... to help you sleep better!

2. Pack a snack.  Take a healthy snack along when you leave in the morning... fruit, unsalted nuts, and low-fat yogurt/cheese.

3. Clear your desk.  De-clutter your outer environment and you may feel more organized, better able to concentrate.

4. Pump up the music.  The right music has the pwer to change your attitude.  Several studies have found that music can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and boost mood.

5. Sniff a lemon.  For a quick de-stressing trick, turn to your sense of smell.  Not into lemons?  Try basil, juniper or lavender.

6. Stretch.  Just a few easy moves will do .. stretch arms overhead, raise and lower your shoulders, stretch your legs as you lean against a wall.

7. Meditate.  It's easier than you think!  Settle into a comfortable position in a chair or on the floor - then follow your breath -- in, out -- for a few minutes.  Meditating daily, even for just a few minutes, may help tame stress.  Breathe!

8. Keep a gratitude diary.  Take a minute every day to write down what you are thankful for - big or small.

9. Turn off the electronics.  Take a break away from your gadgets.  Log off every now and then.  Set up your answering machine or voice mail.  Just mecause the world is on 24-7 you don't have to be!

10. Prioritize.  Give yourself permission to admit you can't get everything done all at once.  Make a list, figure out what really matters, what can wait, and what you can skip.  Bit by bit, you'll get there!
