A note from your Parish Nurse Ministry….
Sitting is the new smoking!
Prolonged sitting is hazardous to your health
Studies show we now sit more than we sleep…spending an average of 10 hours a day in a car, at work and in front of a television/computer. Mounting evidence suggests that sitting for long periods increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer and early death, even for people who exercise daily.
vThink of ways to add physical activity to your workday and leisure time.
vReduce TV viewing. Stand up when fast-forwarding or changing channels.
vPut your computer on a plastic milk crate on the desk and work standing up.
vDeliver messages to colleagues in person instead of texting or emailing.
vSet your computer to remind you to stand up and stretch every 30 minutes.
vStand up when the phone rings.
vUse a bathroom that is a longer distance from your desk/couch.
vTake the stairs when possible….take the longer route to the mailbox.
vHide the TV remote!
vTake a 20 minute walk over your lunch hour.
vLook at minor chores as an opportunity to prevent disease.
